Ecuador & LCM: New Supply Chain

As Australia’s LCM team excitedly awaits the arrival of new Ecuadorian coffee, we thought it would be a great opportunity to shine a light on Ecuador’s history of coffee production.  The small country of Ecuador is home to some of the most attractive and potential filled coffee. Made up of small farm producers situated across the diverse landscape combination of the fertile Andes as well as the low-lying coast of Manabí. While Ecuador may not be the first origin you think of when you think of all the incredible coffee producing countries situated on the equator, it is not one to forget about.

Coffee History

The long history of small farmers lends itself to a rich story increasingly noticed by importers and roasters from around the world. Coffee plantations were introduced in the 1860s in the coastal town of Manabí Province and soon became some of the most valuable crops. In the 1990s to early 2000s Ecuador experienced a decline in coffee production due to economic instability. However, increasing demand internationally for specialty coffee has triggered a rise in rehabilitation of coffee plantations and increased production.

The small country surrounded by giants, located between two of the world’s largest coffee producers, Colombia, and Peru. Ecuador stands to be one of the exotic coffee locations relatively uncovered, mainly due to incomparable production quantities to their powerhouse neighbours.
